Today marks the final day of the elimination round of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup with Magnolia taking on NLEX in the opener and Brgy. Ginebra facing NorthPort in the main event.
So far, the fate of 7 teams have already been sealed. Out for an early vacation are Meralco, Columbian and Blackwater while Phoenix Pulse and Rain or Shine are the top 2 seeds with the Fuel Masters locking in on number 1. TNT finished at number 4 while defending champion San Miguel is at number 5. The Beermen take on the KaTropa in a best-of-three series in the quarterfinals.
Here are the scenarios after today’s games.
1. NLEX and NorthPort win
Alaska will be eliminated. There will be a triple-tie for 6th place. The Batang Pier will settle for the 8th seed due to inferior quotient among the three teams. If NLEX wins by 9 points or more, the Road Warriors will snatch the 6th spot from the Hotshots. Otherwise, Magnolia stays at 6th while the Road Warriors finish at 7th.
2. Magnolia and Brgy. Ginebra win
There will be a four-way tie for number 7 with NLEX, NorthPort, Alaska and Columbian all having similar 4-7 records. In this case, the Hotshots hold on to 6th place while NLEX will have a lock on number 7 due to superiors quotient. Columbian will be eliminated while NorthPort and Alaska will figure in a knockout match for the 8th and last spot in the next round.
3. NLEX and Brgy. Ginebra win
There will be a triple-tie for number 8 with Alaska, Columbian and NorthPort all with 4-7 records. Columbian will be eliminated due to inferior quotient while Alaska and NorthPort will figure in a knockout match for the right to face top seed Phoenix Pulse in the quarters. NLEX takes the 6th spot while Magnolia slides to number 7.
4. Magnolia and NorthPort win
The Hotshots clinch 6th spot while the Batang Pier salvage number 7. NLEX, Columbia and Alaska end up tied for 8th place with identical 4-7 records. Once again, Columbian gets the boot while NLEX and Alaska square off for the last quarterfinal ticket.
Top seeded Phoenix Pulse will take on the 8th ranked team while Rain or Shine will have a date with the 7th. The Fuel Masters and the Elasto Painters enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage. As previously mentioned, TNT and San Miguel tangle in best-of-three affair while Brgy. Ginebra and whoever turns out to be the 6th seed will figure in their own best-of-three series.
