Brgy. Ginebra coach Tim Cone recently bared during an interview that the defending champions will try to avoid the powerhouse San Miguel team in the playoffs.
“Obviously, we’d love to be top two, but that’s already decided. We just need to be in the highest seed that we can get and hope we avoid San Miguel coming into the playoffs,” said the league’s most successful bench tactician with 21 titles tucked under his belt.
“We respect all the teams but obviously, we really don’t want to play San Miguel in a quarterfinal match. No one wants to play San Miguel in the quarters,” Cone added.
For his part, SMB team captain Arwind Santos said that the feeling is mutual.
“Kami rin ayaw din namin sila makaharap. Balanced lang,” said Santos shortly after the Beermen won over the Phoenix Pulse Fuel Masters for their first back-to-back wins in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
“Hangga’t maaari kung maghaharap kami, sana sa Finals na,” added the outspoken 2013 PBA Most Valuable Player.
Santos, however, maintained that choosing the team’s playoff opponent is farthest from their minds as the 2018 Commissioner’s Cup runner-up would rather focus on making it into the top six first.
“Ayun yung target namin. Kasi ang laki ng pagkakaiba doon sa seven and eight kasi kailangan mong talunin ng dalawang beses yung one and two kahit sabihin natin na mananalo ka ng isa, pero pangalawa hindi mo masabi,” said the 8-time PBA champion.
“Mas maganda pa rin yung best-of-three, nandodoon kami, kung sino man makakatapat namin doon, kumpiyansa pa rin kami na makukuha namin yun. One game at a time lang,” Santos added.
