Brgy. Ginebra first to hit the courts as PBA teams resume workouts

Brgy. Ginebra became the first PBA team to conduct workouts as the Gin Kings started training at the Upper Deck Sports Center as early as 7am during the first day of the league’s gradual return to action.

The 2020 Philippine Cup was called off by commissioner Willie Marcial last March 11 due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professional sports was eventually given the go-signal to proceed with non-contact activities by the government’s Inter-Agency Task Force after the National Capital Region was placed under General Community Quarantine on August 19.

The teams were split into groups of four as part of the league’s strict health protocols. One member of the coaching staff and one health officer will accompany the players with the sessions limited only to workouts.

League chairman Ricky Vargas bared that the Commissioner’s Office would be strictly monitoring the sessions.

“Ready na kami mag-practice. Most of the teams are preparing following the very strict protocols that have been set up by the PBA, the Board of Governors, and the Commissioner. Our commissioner will police the process. His task is go around the practice areas to watch over the protocols of the teams. We are ready,” explained Vargas.

The TNT KaTropa board governor added that the league has put together a medical committee led by renowned doctor Raul Canlas to monitor the practices and ensure that guidelines and protocols are being observed.

Other squads who also had their workouts during the morning of August 25 were Rain or Shine (8am), Alaska and Blackwater (9am), and San Miguel (10am).
