Brgy. Ginebra overcame a Magnolia squad that won’t go away, grinding out a 97-93 win in overtime to stay in the race for a twice-to-beat quarterfinals bonus in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last night.
Scottie Thompson delivered a career-best 27 points that went with 11 rebounds in a big double-double effort and Japeth Aguilar churned out his own “D-D” with 16 markers and 12 boards as the Kings survived the Hotshots in a cutthroat battle.
The Kings, thus, improved to 5-3 at fourth place and stayed in the fight for No. 2 seeding in the quarterfinals versus the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (8-3) and the TNT KaTropa (6-3).
Ginebra avenged its semifinal loss to Magnolia in the last Governors Cup and in the process dropped the Hotshots to a precarious spot at 3-5.
The Hotshots must do well in their last three games against the NorthPort Batang Pier, the Blackwater Elite and the NLEX Road Warriors if they’re to salvage a playoff berth.
Thompson and Aguilar stepped up big time and saved the day for LA Tenorio in his coronation as the league’s new Iron Man in playing 597 consecutive games.
