Brgy. Ginebra formally secured a twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals of the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup after thrashing Columbian Dyip, 113-90, Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
The Gin Kings, who are coming off an emphatic 96-93 victory over erstwhile tournament leader TNT, improved to 7-3 which is good for solo 4th in the team standings.
Justin Brownlee came one assist and one rebound shy of another triple-double as the Best Import of the 2018 Commissioner’s Cup finished with 26 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 steals and 4 blocks to lead a balanced Brgy. Ginebra attack.
“We had a 19-point lead, and gave it up, and then we had a 20-point lead again. That’s the personality of Columbian. They come back from so many big leads and teams come back on them because they push the ball constantly,” said Brgy. Ginebra coach Tim Cone.
“I thought we did a good job on CJ (Perez) for most of the time. He was our target. We really targeted him. Their import is a horse. He is tough. But, I thought we took our foot off the gas on certain times of the game and they made us pay for it,” added the concurrent Gilas Pilipinas mentor.
Stanley Pringle and Jeff Chan contributed 20 markers apiece with both dropping 4 triples each. Japeth Aguilar added 19 points and 16 boards while Arthur dela Cruz chipped in 16 points.
LA Tenorio and Scottie Thompson failed to score in double figures but dished out 14 and 10 assists, respectively.
Khapri Alston paced the Dyip with 34 points and 22 boards while super rookie CJ Perez had 19 markers.
Brgy. Ginebra will be back on the hardcourt on Sunday, November 17 to round up its elimination round schedule against NorthPort at the Big Dome.
