Christian Standhardinger recovered a missed attempt by Stanley Pringle and then unleashed an off-balanced jumper which found the bottom of the net just as time expired to give Brgy. Ginebra a thrilling 87-85 win over NorthPort, Friday night in the elimination round of the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The 6-foot-8 Fil-German’s heroics, however, would not have happened had it not for Japeth Aguilar’s game-saving block on NorthPort’s high-flying rookie Jamie Malonzo in the previous play.
The Gin Kings registered their second win of the season against two losses while the Batang Pier fell to 1-3.
Pringle paced the defending champions with 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field while LA Tenorio added 20 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists.
“He kept running down the floor, he was down there with Japeth on the block, but yet he came all the way back down the floor and within seven seconds, got that offensive rebound and put it in for the win,” said head coach Tim Cone on his prized acquisition.
“When Malonzo was in that breakaway layup, it looked pretty bleak and looked like we were gonna lose the basketball game. But then Japeth hustles down, comes out of nowhere, and blocks the dunk,” he added.
“Just a game-saving block. He had one in a bubble too, he just blocked the shot in the last second and saved the game. He did it in the Finals a year ago. Amazing. Didn’t quit on the play. And Christian didn’t quit on the play either.”
Japeth Aguilar chipped in 15 points while Standhardinger finished with 13 to go along with 12 boards and 2 assists.
Robert Bolick paced the Batang Pier with 23 points while Greg Slaughter scored 16 and hauled down a game-high 14 rebounds in his first game against his former team.
