Columbian Dyip head coach John Cardel has denied rumors that a deal is in the works to send their prized rookie, 2018 top draft pick CJ Perez to Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel for an undisclosed player plus future picks.
“There’s no truth to that. There have been rumors before that CJ will be heading to Brgy. Ginebra, but again, those are plain rumors,” said the former PBA player. “CJ has assured me that he’ll give his 100 percent for the team. And that’s a great attitude.”
Perez led the Dyip in scoring and rebounding with averages of 16.5 points and 7 boards per contest in his very first conference. The 25-year old product of Lyceum of the Philippines played in all 11 games and almost led his team into the playoffs, narrowly missing the cut due to inferior quotient.
“I’ve seen huge improvement on CJ, especially his outside shooting. He just simply needs to mature further in his game, but he’s got a great attitude. Every day is a learning process for him,” stressed Cardel who is convinced that his team can come up with a much better performance in the upcoming Commissioner’s Cup which is set to kick off on May 19.
“That’s how it is in the PBA. But for me, I’m just grateful to be given the chance to coach now in the PBA. And with whatever we have achieved so far in the Philippine Cup, we hope to build on that and try to reach the playoffs in the Commissioner’s Cup.”
