Gin Kings reactivate Aljon Mariano, drop Maurice Shaw from active roster

Brgy. Ginebra made a personnel adjustment in preparation for its quarterfinal meeting with the TNT Tropang Giga on Wednesday, March 16.

The Gin Kings reactivated forward Aljon Mariano while big man Maurice Shaw was dropped from the active roster.

The 37-year old Shaw, who was recently elevated from the 3×3 team in time for the league resumption last February 11, is now an unrestricted free agent with rights to salary.

Mariano, meanwhile, underwent surgery twice to remove bone spurs on his foot and hasn’t seen action for the crowd darlings since the start of the conference. It is still unclear, however, if he is fit enough to play in the upcoming quarterfinal round.

The Tim Cone-mentored squad has been experiencing rough sailing so far in the season-ending conference. They started off on the right foot by winning their first three games but their fortunes changed after a Christmas day loss to archrival Magnolia. They would lose the next three matches to make it a 4-game slide.

The defending champs finally got over the slump by pulling off back-to-back wins against expansion teams Blackwater and Terrafirma. A crucial defeat against NLEX once again dampened the mood but the pain of losing was somehow eased after the team survived Rain or Shine in the final elimination round game.

The league’s most popular squad, winners of 3 of the last 4 stagings of the Governors’ Cup, finished the 2021 edition with a 6-5 record and will start the playoffs with a twice-to-win disadvantage against the flagship team of the MVP group which is led by Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes and super rookie Mikey Williams.
