Japeth Aguilar joins list of PBA’s 15 best shot blockers

Japeth Aguilar registered 3 shot blocks during Game 1 of the 2019 PBA Governor’s Cup best-of-seven Finals series between Brgy. Ginebra and Meralco, none bigger that his rejection of Allen Durham’s potential game-tying basket with only 14 seconds left on the game clock.

The game-saving block enabled the high-flying national team player to move past Ricky Relosa (574) in the PBA’s all-time list of shot blockers.

With 575 career shot blocks, Aguilar is now ranked number 15.

Brgy. Ginebra coach Tim Cone couldn’t help but marvel at the timing and athletic abilities of the 32-year old native of Sasmuan, Pampanga.

“It’s really nice to see him do that defensively. He’s done so many things offensively and he’s done that defensively, too but that was really spectacular, that block at the end of the game. One-on-one with Durham, full steam, getting up and getting a hand on that shot,” said Cone.

“It was really a tremendous play, one of the best I’ve seen in a long time,” he added.

For his part, Aguilar would rather focus on staying sharp against the dangerous Bolts for the duration of the series.

“One game pa lang yan. It’s a long series for us, yun ang mentality namin. We’re glad nakuha namin itong game na ito, three more wins pa. Sana masustain namin yung defensive energy, or mahigitan pa namin,” said the son of former Ginebra player Peter Aguilar.
