Japeth Aguilar devastated after being ruled out for the rest of the Philippine Cup

Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel big man Japeth Aguilar has been ruled out for the rest of the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup as per head coach Tim Cone – a not so welcome development for the defending champions.

The 6-foot-9 pride of Pampanga got hurt during the fourth quarter of the game against the TNT Tropang Giga last September 12 where the crowd darlings lost, 67-88. Tests did not show any tear in the ligament but he also did not show any signs of improvement from the medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprain he suffered.

Brgy. Ginebra head coach Tim Cone confirmed that Aguilar has already left the semi-bubble in Pampanga to continue with his recovery in Manila.

“He went back to Manila yesterday. And from what we’ve seen, it’s our opinion at this point that he’s out for the rest of the conference. Even through the Finals. I don’t [see] any possibility to get him back. And if we did, we might rush him back and injure him again”, the Gin Kings coach admitted.

Cone said that the first overall pick by Burger King during the 2009 PBA draft tried to fast-track his recovery in order to rejoin the team but there was hardly any progress.

“He’s devastated. He wants to play. But he was sent home yesterday – finally. He should’ve gone home a week or two ago after the injury, but he kept trying to get it done. But it was obvious now that he’s not gonna be able to make it. Sayang, he’s not made any improvements. He’s still a long way away,” added by the 63-year old bench tactician.

Brgy. Ginebra will surely miss Aguilar and his averages of 14.6 points on 52.3-percent shooting, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks in the eight games he played this season.
