NorthPort guard Sol Mercado sustained an ankle injury during the 3rd quarter of Game 2 of the team’s semifinal affair against former team Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel.
The 35-year old Fil-Am landed awkwardly on the foot of Gin Kings counterpart LA Tenorio after attempting to block his three-point attempt.
The Batang Pier went on to lose Game 2, 113-88, and the crowd darlings leveled the best-of-five series at 1-1.
Mercado, who only managed 2 points in 6 minutes of play, had to be assisted by teammates Christian Standhardinger and Sean Anthony on his way back to the team’s bench after the incident.
NorthPort team manager Bonnie Tan bared that the initial diagnosis is an ankle sprain but the team is already preparing for the possibility that the 11-year veteran will be out for the next game which is set on Wednesday, December 18 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Tenorio, for his part, is hoping for the best for his former backcourt partner.
“Hindi ko alam yung nangyari. Siguro malala yun kasi talagang nag-twist. Sabi ko nga sa referee, ako dapat ang foul kasi ako ang natapakan,” said Brgy. Ginebra’s chief playmaker.
“I hope na hindi naman serious yung kay Sol kasi mahirap din na mawala. They are really playing good basketball. Mahirap yung may nawawala sa team especially si Sol na one of the vets na nandoon sa NorthPort na sanay sa playoff basketball,” he added.
