Former PBA commissioner Noli Eala has expressed his preference for Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel head coach Tim Cone to take over from Yeng Guiao as mentor of the Gilas Pilipinas Men’s team.
Eala, who served as top honcho for Asia’s first professional league from 2003 to 2007, replied to a report by Spin.ph regarding an online clamor for Tab Baldwin to assume the post he held from 2014 to 2016.
“I’m still for Tim Cone to be head coach. Its been over 21 years since he handled the NT. He is the most successful coach in the PBA and its time he gets another shot,” wrote the former play-by-play commentator on his Twitter account.
Cone, currently the PBA’s most decorated bench tactician with 21 titles tucked under his belt, handled the country’s national basketball team in 1998 and led the squad to the bronze medal in the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games.
The team, nicknamed the Philippine Centennial Team, finished third behind gold-medalist China and Korea and was composed of Johnny Abarrientos, Marlou Aquino, Allan Caidic, Kenneth Duremdes, Dennis Espino, E. J. Feihl, Jojo Lastimosa, Jun Limpot, Vergel Meneses, Alvin Patrimonio, Olsen Racela and Andy Seigle.
The 61-year old Cone led the same team all the way to the title in the 1998 edition of the William Jones Cup.
Guiao has since resigned from his post leaving the top coaching position of Gilas Pilipinas vacant.
