Brgy. Ginebra absorbed a 34-point beating at the hands of NorthPort, 124-90, in the series opener of their best-of-five semifinal affair in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup, Saturday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Fresh from a stunning upset of top-seeded NLEX in the quarterfinal round, the Batang Pier continued from where they left off and managed to register an unexpected rout of the 2017 Governors’ Cup titlists despite coming off a 17-day break.
Import Michael Qualls led the Batang Pier, who outscored the Gin Kings 46-22 in the final frame, with 38 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals in 43 minutes of action.
“Maybe we just caught Ginebra on an off night, maybe we benefited more from the long break. But you could see we’re the hungrier team and we executed our game plan well, especially on defense,” said NorthPort coach Pido Jarencio during the post-game presser.
Garvo Lanete came off the bench to finish with 24 points, highlighted by 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point country, in just 15 minutes of play in the 2nd half.
Christian Standhardinger added 16 points and 15 boards while Sol Mercado and Sean Anthony chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Justin Brownlee paced the Gin Kings with 24 markers and 19 rebounds while Stanley Pringle provided the lone local support as the former NorthPort star contributed 21 points.
Game 2 of the series is on Monday, December 16 also at the Big Dome.
