Scottie Thompson, Brgy. Ginebra’s top rebounder during the most recent staging of the PBA Philippine Cup, has begged off from the Gilas Pilipinas Men’s training pool.
This development was disclosed by Yeng Guiao, head coach of the country’s national basketball team, shortly after the squad’s Monday evening practice.
“Siguro pwede na nating sabihin na Scottie talked to me noong nasa Batangas kami. He’s also begging off. I appreciate his honesty, I appreciate his talking to me,” said Guiao.
“He feels he’s not ready to compete internationally. It is his belief, mayroon siyang paniwala na mayroon pang ibang pwedeng makakuha ng slot niya na who can perform that role,” he added.
Thompson suited up for Gilas during the 2nd round of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers and averaged 2.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 5 games.
He was replaced by Thirdy Ravena in the 6th and final game of the tournament.
“That’s another slot we’re going to fill up. I can appreciate his position. Ang sinasabi niya na he needs to develop his game, he needs to mature his game in order to play at the standards of the international level,” said the concurrent NLEX Road Warriors mentor.
“Gusto niyang magpagaling daw, yung i-improve pa yung skills niya and magbabalik siya sa Gilas kung iimbitahin siya ulit.”
