Scottie Thompson drained a corner three with a fraction of a second remaining to give Brgy. Ginebra the lead and the win over Meralco in Game 5 of their semifinal series in the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup, Friday night at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena and Cultural Center in Angeles City, Pampanga.
With the game clock down to the final 14.5 seconds and the score tied at 80, Scottie inbounded the ball to Japeth Aguilar who immediately handed it over to Stanley Pringle. The high-scoring Fil-Am assessed the situation and then flipped it over to Prince Caperal who thought about it but eventually decided to pass it to a partially open Thompson. Without hesitation, the 2018 Commissioner’s Cup Finals MVP let it fly and the ball hit nothing but the bottom of the net.
The final score was pegged at 83-80 as the Gin Kings clinched the best-of-five series against the Bolts and advanced to the championship round of the All-Filipino conference.
“Sobrang nagpapasalamat kami kay God, especially ‘yung last tira ko. Talagang tinira ko na lang kasi wala nang oras. And good thing talagang pinasa ni Prince [Caperal] kasi medyo open din ako sa corner,” said an overjoyed Thompson.
“So tinira ko lang, and si God na ang naka-shoot nun,” he added.
The 27-year old native of Padada, Davao del Sur finished with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field to go along with team-highs of 12 rebounds and 7 assists plus a steal in 38 minutes of action.
“Lahat ng ginagawa namin before ng bubble na ‘to, talagang nag-pay off. Sobrang saya kasi Finals na ulit, All-Filipino, ito talaga ‘yung pinakahinahangad namin as a team. And siyempre, ‘yung mga fans talaga,” said Thompson.
“Our job is not yet done.”
