From the cellar, the Terrafirma Dyip have emerged as a red-hot, giant-killing team in the 46th PBA Philippine Cup in Bacolor, Pampanga.
Riding on the sizzling hands of Juami Tiongson and the solid plays of their veterans, the Dyip pulled off back-to-back victories at the expense of heavyweight teams San Miguel Beer and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel no less at the resumption of play.
Two days after toppling the Beermen in overtime, 110-104, the Dyip continued their charge and dropped the upset axe on the Gin Kings, 95-90, in Friday’s mid-afternoon matchup at the Don Honorio Ventura State U Gym.
It was the Dyip’s first-ever victory in franchise history against Ginebra, which had prevailed in their 16 prior meetings. They also posted the first back-to-back Ws by a team over SMB and Ginebra in the All-Filipino since TNT in 2012.
Coach John Cardel and his rejuvenated charges improved to 2-4, just half a game behind the Gin Kings (2-3) in the standings.
“Gusto talaga ng players manalo. We started very poor, 0-4, so going to the semi-bubble, talagang I talked to the players isa-isa, especially the veterans and they also did their part and kinausap kapwa players,” said Cardel after posting Terrafirma’s first two-game streak in a conference since the 2017 Commissioner’s Cup.
