Tim Cone has formally accepted the offer of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to serve as the head coach for the Gilas Pilipinas Men’s team in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games set to take place in the country from November 30 to December 11.
“I spoke to Tim Cone last Saturday and he expressed interested but wanted to finish his game last night and talk to his family first,” said SBP president Al Panlilio.
“Now I’m very happy to announce that coach Tim has officially accepted the role as head coach for Gilas Pilipinas Men in the upcoming SEA Games,” he added.
Cone, who was earlier given the go-signal by San Miguel Corporation president Ramon Ang and SMC Sports Director Alfrancis Chua, will be taking over the post vacated by Yeng Guiao after the fiery NLEX Road Warriors mentor stepped down in the aftermath an embarrassing last place finish in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
With Cone now officially on board, the SBP can now proceed with the formation of the national team.
The Philippines has bagged the gold medal in Men’s basketball during the last 12 stagings of the biennial meet, and a total of 17 out of the 19 times since the sport was included in the games.
“The resolution of our head coach situation should signify the start of our SEA Games preparations because the other countries like Indonesia are already putting in the work,” said Panlilio.
“We also want to reiterate that we’re taking it one step at a time and this arrangement is for the SEA Games only, for now. We’re still putting together a plan on how to move forward with our preparations for 2023 and beyond,” added the Team Governor of the Meralco Bolts in the PBA.
