Scottie Thompson has missed Brgy. Ginebra’s last two games due to he PBA’s health and safety protocols and head coach Tim Cone is hoping that 28-year old out of the University of Perpetual Help can clear protocols ahead of their quarterfinal duel with top seed TNT Tropang Giga.
“We’re hoping we might be able to get him Tuesday or Wednesday. But we’re not sure – we have to check with the PBA with the medical procedures and such and see if we can get him back,” said Cone after his troops outdueled Phoenix Super LPG to gain the eighth and final spot in the quarterfinal phase of the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup at the Don Honorio Ventura State University at Bacolor, Pampanga.
Averaging 12.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks, the absence of the do-it-all guard was widely felt by the Gin Kings in their loss to the Meralco Bolts in their final game of the eliminations. Though they were able to withstand the gritty Phoenix Super LPG in the battle of the 8th spot, having Thompson back against TNT would be a positive sign for the crowd favorites, especially now that forward Japeth Aguilar has already been declared out for the rest of the conference due to knee injury.
Despite being out for quite some time, the 23-time PBA champion coach believes that Thompson can deliver right away.
“We just have our fingers crossed. But he’s the kind of guy that if he comes up, he’s gonna keep himself in shape doing something down there. And if he can come up and play he’ll be great right away. If he arrives an hour before the game, he’ll still play 30 minutes. He finds a way. Hopefully, we can get him back up and help us out”, explained the league’s winningest mentor.
