Tim Cone cannot help but marvel at Justin Brownlee’s 49-point performance against Manila Clasico rival Magnolia in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, Sunday evening at the jam-packed Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The 31-year old, 3-time PBA champion came 3 assists shy of a triple-double and also had 20 rebounds to go along with his career-best in points to power Brgy. Ginebra to a crucial 102-81 win over Cone’s former team which clinched a seat for the defending champions in the quarterfinal round.
“What can you say about Justin. If that’s not an MJ performance tonight, I’ve never seen an MJ performance,” said Cone in reference to retired NBA great Michael Jordan.
Brownlee shot a scorching 6 of 9 from 3-point country and 18 out of 24 overall that all but reminded Cone of Jordan’s performances when he was still an active player for the Chicago Bulls.
“All the MJ performances, I’ve seen through the years, and I tell you, I watched every Bulls game on tape at the time. That’s one of MJ’s greatest games right there except that it was Justin’s body doing the thing,” said the league’s most successful bench tactician.
“Really amazing play by him,” he added.
The reigning Best Import of the conference, however, totally downplayed his coach’s comparison of him to arguably the greatest basketball player of all time.
“It’s a great complement and comparison. I definitely appreciate it. But man, that’s a bad man to be compared. I just really appreciate it. Just take the complement,” said Brownlee.
