Brgy. Ginebra’s multi-titled coach Tim Cone has always been a believer of his chief point guard LA Tenorio, seeing how the Batangas native plays dating back to their days with Alaska. And he knew that the 4th overall pick of the 2006 draft would have a great bounce-back game after a forgettable performance.
LA Tenorio scored 23 points highlighted by 6-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc, grabbed 4 rebounds and issued 5 assists to help his team overcome the gritty Phoenix Super LPG squad and take home a 94-87 come from behind win, Wednesday night at the Don Honorio Ventura State University Gym in Bacolor, Pampanga. Tenorio’s performance against the Fuel Masters was far better than his previous output in their game against the TNT Katropa, where he was held scoreless in nearly 38 minutes of playing time, missing all his 13 attempts from the field.
Cone expected that ‘The Gineral’ would step up big this time, knowing that the point guard always redeems himself after playing poorly the last time, as what great players always do. He even compared the 9-time PBA All Star to his resident import, Justin Brownlee.
According to the 23-time PBA champion coach, great players also have off nights but what makes them great is how they bounce back from these nights.
“Great players don’t play great every night. They don’t. But they are usually consistent but they don’t play great every night. LA reminds me of Justin Brownlee a lot in terms of the mentality in which he plays,” explained Cone. “Justin would have some real bad games or some, what I call, clunkers where he will come out and not be able to make a shot. But the thing about Justin, the next game was a guarantee. He would go out and play great. And I’ve always felt that with LA always in my career.”
Cone added that Tenorio is known to have a strong mentality and he was truly impressed with the way the 37-year old guard played Wednesday night.
“He was the one that brought us back with his three-point shooting. He was awesome not just in terms of shooting but in terms of leadership. I was really impressed with LA tonight. Again, I really believe in that kid. He’s got such a strong mentality. I was not worried at all. I knew he will have a great night and he did.”
