Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel head coach Tim Cone has already spoken to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio regarding the recently vacated head coaching position of the country’s national basketball team.
“I’ve been in conversation with SBP president Al Panlilio regarding the SEA Games Head Coaching position for basketball,” said Cone who is reportedly the top choice for the post last held by Yeng Guiao.
“I know that Mr. Panlilio and my boss, Alfrancis Chua, have also had discussions regarding the position,” Cone added in a text message to members of the press.
Gilas Pilipinas finished dead last in a field of 32 nations in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup which prompted Guiao to immediately step down.
With barely two months to go before the country hosts the South East Asian Games, the SBP is in a rush to fill the position and assemble a team composed of professional and amateur players.
Cone, however, is keeping his focus on the Gin King’s upcoming game against Alaska on Sunday before making the much-awaited decision on Monday, September 23.
“At this time, however, my total focus is on our Ginebra game vs Alaska tomorrow to open the Governor’s Cup,” said the 61-year old former Alaska and Magnolia mentor.
“On Monday and after talking to my family, Mr. Panlilio and I will continue our conversation regarding the appointment, at which time we will come to a resolution,” Cone added.
