San Miguel’s grand slam hopes are no more.
The Ginebra San Miguel prevented the San Miguel Beermen from becoming the sixth team to achieve a grand slam with an emphatic 104-84 win in the quarterfinals of the 2017 PBA Governors’ Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena Wednesday, September 27.
Ginebra, which led by 13 after the third quarter, broke the game wide open with back-to-back threes from Joe Devance and Sol Mercado before unleashing an 11-2 run for a 24-point lead midway the last quarter, 91-67.
It was all Ginebra from there as it enjoyed a 102-72 lead, its largest of the game, after Scottie Thompson buried a trey with 2:39 remaining.
“Nobody saw that one coming. We just played great from start to finish. We were on our game and we used our bigs to we just to pound and pound the ball inside. We had couple of massive games from Joe Devance and Justin [Brownlee] that propelled us,” said Ginebra head coach Tim Cone.
Brownlee poured in a game-high 37 points, on 59 percent shooting, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks to lead Ginebra which will face the winner between the TNT KaTropa and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
