Brgy. Ginebra unleashed a crippling 9-0 finishing kick which shattered an 89-all deadlock and gave the Gin Kings an 98-89 advantage and eventually the win over Rain or Shine, Saturday night in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Justin Brownlee scored 4 straight points while Scottie Thompson drained the dagger three as the 2017 Governors’ Cup titlists made it three wins in a row after losing back-to-back to improve to 4-2 which is good for a tie for 4th place with the idle Meralco Bolts.
Rain or Shine, meanwhile, failed in its bid to secure another win after routing Blackwater in its previous game and fell to 2-6.
“Really tough game and honestly, it’s a kind of game we needed. We needed to have a grind-out, down-the-stretch game. We’ve had a lot of big leads where we are trying to hold off or we fell behind and came back. This was a tough game from start to finish. No one led by a lot of points except early. Those early leads are superficial,” said Gin Kings coach Tim Cone during the post-game presser.
“But the fact that we need to grind this one out is good for the team. We have to be willing to play this kind of games,” added the league’s winningest mentor.
