After a 0-2 start, Phoenix Pulse broke into the win-column in the PBA Governors Cup with a dramatic 103-101 win over Barangay Ginebra in a Petron Blaze Saturday Special at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Fuel Masters blew away a 23-point spread but stayed intact and came through at endgame, pulling through even on the ejection of coach Louie Alas on a second technical infraction early in the fourth quarter.
Matthew Wright top scored with 28 points, including the deciding basket in the last five seconds, preserving the triple-double game of Eugene Phelps with 27 markers, 23 rebounds and 11 assists.
The Fuel Masters seized control early on a 41-point explosion in the first quarter only to allow Ginebra to get into the game in the closing seconds, with a steal and a transition basket by Justin Brownlee tying the count at 101.
But Wright nailed the game’s biggest shot with 5.6 seconds to go, saving the day for Phoenix which carved a first win after back-to-back losses to NLEX and San Miguel Beer.
