Barangay Ginebra played the tempo that they wanted and beat out the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in a defensive battle, grinding out an 83-77 victory Wednesday night in the PBA Philippine Cup at the DHVSU Gym in Bacolor, Pampanga.
The Kings fought the E-Painters defense for defense and hustle for hustle, and seized command at the finish to chalk up a third win against the same number of defeats.
Coach Tim Cone and his troops redeemed themselves from their sorry loss to the Terrafirma Dyip the last time out and moved up to seventh, just behind the Elasto Painters who dropped to 4-4.
“We let our defense do the talking. We played a real good defensive team in Rain or Shine. Statistically, they’re the toughest defensive team in the league. So, for us to go out, we have to play a real good defense. And I think we won the hustle charts,” said Cone.
The Ginebra mentor felt Scottie Thompson best typified their effort with the gritty off-guard’s six rebounds, six assists, two steals and one block that went with his 14 points.
Thompson was efficient with his 3-of-3 three-pointers and 5-of-6 field shooting overall, with his last triple in the night breaking the back of the E-Painters.
“Nakuha namin ‘yong game namin,” said Thompson whose clutch trey capped a 7-0 tear that made it 82-74 inside the final minute of the game.
