TNT KaTropa held off Barangay Ginebra, 95-92, to draw first blood in their best-of-five PBA Commissioners Cup semifinal series Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The KaTropa tightened their defense in the closing stretch to come back from an explosive third quarter from the Kings, with Terrence Jones coming up with a crucial steal and two baskets to help seal the win.
Jones and Troy Rosario topped with 24 points apiece in the Game 1 victory.
“Obviously the defense gave us the win. It really helped us especially during the end of the game when we made some crucial stops,” said TNT coach Bong Ravena.
Led by Justin Brownlee, Ginebra unleashed a blistering 11-0 rally to turn a one-point deficit into a double-digit advantage midway through the third period.
